Stele of Reuben, son of Haninai

Provenance Castelló d'Empúries
Chronology 1343 (5103)
Material Limestone
Record MHJ074
SectionCemetery

This is the only tombstone from Castelló d'Empúries in the Museum; unfortunately, the deceased has not been identified. Haninai could correspond to the name Aninai/Aninay/Avinai, a family that would become highly important in Girona in the 15th century. Most probably, this family had branches in nearby towns and throughout its area of influence.

Translation:
(Front side)
He delighted in the precepts [of the Lord], and his heart [...]
became silent. He kept away from evil,
God-fearing, he came out,
on the day of punishment, clean
from [troubles]. His name is
Rabbi Reuben, son of Rabbi Haninai,
may the memory of him live in the world to come.
(Upper side)
He went to his eternal rest in the month of Av
of the year [5]103 of the count
of the Creation. May his soul be wrapped
in the bag of the living...
