Parchment scroll of a mezuzah. It contains 22 lines of text from Deuteronomy:
"Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is ONE. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. Engrave in your heart the words of the commandments I give you today. Teach them to your children; speak of them at home and along the way, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them on your hand as a sign, wear them as a mark between your eyes. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on the gates of your city" (Dt. VI, 4‑9).
This parchment was kept inside a metal case set into a stone slit on the doorframe of a Jewish family home. In some places in Girona, the slits in stones from the old Call can still be seen.
The mezuzah was touched when entering and leaving a Jewish home.
