Archives Week

International Archives Day is celebrated worldwide on June 9, coinciding with the date of the creation of the International Council on Archives (ICA) in 1948 under the auspices of UNESCO. The official declaration of this date was approved at the annual meeting of the ICA Executive Board in November 2007, held in Vienna. The various initiatives carried out around the world can be consulted on the International Council on Archives website.

The aim of International Archives Day is to highlight the essential role of archives in ensuring efficient, accountable and transparent management, protecting citizens’ rights, safeguarding individual and collective memory, understanding the past, documenting the present and preparing for the future, as stated in the Universal Declaration on Archives, adopted by UNESCO at its 36th General Conference in Paris on November 10, 2011.

Since 2012, the Girona City Council, through the Municipal Archive of Girona, has celebrated this day by organizing various activities related to documentary heritage, open to the general public.

In 2019, the International Council on Archives expanded the outreach campaign to International Archives Week.
