EUreka3D-XR - European Union's REKonstructed content in 3D to produce XR experiences

Definition

EUreka3D-XR is the continuation project of EUreka3D, in which the Centre for Image Research and Diffusion (CRDI) was already involved. It is funded by the European Union’s Digital Europe Programme and its main objective is to develop innovative reuse scenarios and tools that enable the creation of XR (extended reality) applications, by expanding the tools and services already developed and tested in the EUreka3D project.

Objectives

The main research area of EUreka3D-XR focuses on transforming cultural content such as 2D, 3D, video, texts, maps or stories into XR scenarios. The project aims to make these scenarios available in the European common data space for cultural heritage, enrich the corpus of open-access digital cultural content online, and inspire the cultural heritage sector to experiment with new technologies.

EUreka3D-XR will offer five open-source digital tools, including online services and mobile applications, to support innovative reuse of 3D cultural resources in various environments in a collaborative, cost-effective and sustainable way, leveraging XR and other advanced technologies applied to cultural heritage collections.

To demonstrate the use and benefits of the tools, EUreka3D-XR will develop three experimentation scenarios:

  • Virtual visualization of the medieval walls of the city of Girona, led by CRDI
  • XR storytelling of ongoing excavations at the archaeological site of Bibracte
  • Creation of a new virtual life of Saint Neophytos Englystra in Cyprus

The EUreka3D-XR training programme will support the cultural heritage sector in exploring and exploiting new opportunities offered by 3D/XR technologies and the specific solutions developed within the project.

Duration

  • Project start date: 1 February 2025
  • Project end date: 31 July 2026

Participation

The Centre for Image Research and Diffusion (CRDI) develops the pilot scenario for the virtual visualization of the medieval walls of the city of Girona, provides expertise in metadata, and assumes global dissemination and communication tasks for the project. This participation is funded with €134,285, corresponding to 50% of the total estimated cost (€268,570).
