Addressing AI and Authenticity Challenges in Photographic Heritage

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the visual media landscape through powerful restoration and enhancement techniques, advanced image analysis tools, and the rapid emergence of generative systems capable of producing synthetic imagery at scale. These developments challenge long-standing assumptions about authenticity and intellectual property rights, raising complex questions concerning trust, transparency, provenance and attribution. This workshop examines how emerging standards such as JPEG Trust (ISO/IEC 21617) can help establish and maintain trustworthy workflows in photographic heritage. Through practical examples and discussion, participants will explore how authenticity and attribution can be meaningfully addressed within evolving AI-driven workflows.

Frederik Temmermans

Frederik Temmermans is guest professor in multimedia at the Department of Electronics and Informatics (ETRO) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and imec. His research focuses on media privacy, security, authenticity and integrity, with particular attention to trustworthy digital imaging workflows. He has contributed to research projects in the medical, mobile and cultural heritage domains. Frederik is an active member of the JPEG standardization committee (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1), where he chairs the JPEG Systems and Integration subgroup and leads the JPEG Trust (ISO/IEC 21617) standardization activities. He is also co-founder of the VUB spin-off company Universum Digitalis and member of the Photoconsortium Steering Committee.

Emergency Actions in Photographic Archives in the Event of a Flood

In the current context of climate change, and given the forecast of increasingly intense extreme weather events, knowing the risks and being prepared to respond to an emergency situation becomes especially necessary. Recent and nearby experiences, such as the DANA that affected the Valencian Country in October 2024, remind us of how vulnerable photographic heritage can be when faced with flooding.
When photographs come into accidental and uncontrolled contact with water, knowing how to act from the very first moment is essential. It is necessary to assess the situation, establish priorities, and make decisions that help minimize damage and support the recovery of the affected materials. In this context, the first actions can be decisive for their preservation.
This theoretical and practical workshop will provide tools and criteria to anticipate such situations and to know how to act when they occur. It will address aspects related to prevention, the organization of emergency response, and the establishment of priorities, as well as guidelines for handling, treating, and managing photographic materials affected by water. The training will combine theory and practice based on real cases and experiences.
