The Evolution of Photography and the Work of the Photographer

Photography has ceased to be an exclusive chemical process and has become a universal, immediate language. Throughout my career, I have witnessed how the transition from celluloid to the pixel not only transformed our tools, but also reshaped our relationship with time and memory. Today, in a world saturated with fleeting images and artificial‑intelligence algorithms, technological democratization has made it possible for anyone to capture a moment. But does everyone truly know how to see?
It is at this crossroads that the photographer’s work gains more meaning than ever. Our profession is no longer defined by mastering exposure techniques or owning the most expensive equipment; our distinctive value lies in our gaze, our judgement, and our ability to tell intentional stories. Amid visual noise, the photographer acts as an essential filter, bringing depth, context, and honesty to reality.
The challenge today is not the loss of the craft, but its reinvention. Technological evolution pushes us from mere technical capture toward a stronger intellectual authorship. This talk invites reflection on how we can embrace innovation without losing our essence: the pursuit of truth through the lens, and the unwavering commitment to connect with viewers in a human, deliberate, and transcendent way. To create authorial images in clear contrast to the on‑demand archives produced by AI.
