Built in 1675, the Calvari Fort was part of Girona's defensive complex, consisting of a series of forts and redoubts built on the hills surrounding the city. A small, irregular star-shaped fortification, it was equipped with artillery batteries to cover the Galligants gully and flank the Alemanys redoubt. It defended Girona during a number of military confrontations: against the troops of Noailles in 1694, in the War of the Spanish Succession, and in the Peninsular War. It was destroyed by Napoleon's artillery on 19 September 1808.
