1746Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes is born in Fuendetodos (Zaragoza) on March 30.
1769He goes to study at the Accademia del Disegno di San Luca in Rome.
1771He begins experimenting with various printmaking techniques.
1778Publishes etchings that reproduce works by Velázquez from the Royal Collection.
1785Appointed Deputy Director of Painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando.
1786Appointed, together with his brother-in-law Ramón Bayeu, Painter to the King.
1789Appointed Court Painter.
1793While in Seville, he suffers a serious illness that leaves him permanently deaf.
1795Appointed Director of Painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando.
1797Resigns from the position due to health reasons and is made Honorary Director.
Begins preparatory drawings for the Sueños etchings, the seed of the Caprichos.
1799On February 6, the Diario de Madrid publishes the announcement for the sale of the series of 80 Caprichos etchings. Two days later, Goya withdraws them himself, fearing reprisals from the Inquisition.
1808The Peninsular War (also known as the Spanish War of Independence) breaks out with the entry of Napoleonic troops.
1810Begins the etching series The Disasters of War, completed in 1815 with the emphatic Caprichos.
1814The Peninsular War ends with Ferdinand VII returning to power.
Begins La Tauromaquia.
1815Begins the Disparates series (published in 1864 as Proverbios).
1816The 33 etchings of La Tauromaquia go on sale.
1819ALearns the lithography technique, invented in 1796.
Acquires the Quinta del Sordo, a country house on the banks of the Manzanares River in Madrid.
1824Travels to France and visits Paris to deepen his knowledge of lithography. Visits his friend Leandro Fernández de Moratín, poet and playwright, exiled in Bordeaux since the end of the war. Moratín writes: “Goya arrived, deaf, old, clumsy and weak, without knowing a word of French, yet so happy and eager to see the world.
1828EDies in Bordeaux on April 16, at the age of 82.
