Torre Gironella will recover its medieval splendour thanks to an innovative pilot project that binds heritage and technology through an immersive experience using augmented reality and 5G technology.
The project, named Girona Virtual, uses the transformative potential of digital tools to highlight the historical heritage of the city. This experience offers a 3D digital reconstruction of the tower as it was in the 14th century, and anyone can explore it through the browser of their smartphones without needing to download any app. The goal is to preserve and spread the city’s heritage in a respectful way, without physically interfering with the environment. Moreover, historical narratives are connected to the most advanced digital tools, thus creating a synergy between past and present.
Users can freely move around the environment and, by scanning QR codes, they will be able to retrieve the original appearance of the space from different angles thanks to the augmented reality app. This tool will also provide contextual information about architectural and historical elements.
On the other hand, the augmented reality device will be part of the resources offered by the History Museum of Girona in order to make knowledge of the city’s heritage more accessible and appealing.
Torre Gironella, located at the highest spot of the Roman wall of Girona, is a fortress with remains dated from Roman times. Rebuilt throughout centuries, it became a symbol of power and resistance until it was destroyed in 1812. Now, thanks to technology, it rises again virtually over the city.
