A commitment to the new art Journeys of the avant-garde in Catalonia through the Rafael and María Teresa Santos Torroella collection Temporary exhibition

Synchronisation | The new generations of the 1960s

Figurative vs. abstract

In the 1960s, new generations of artists appeared that represented a reaction to an abstract art that had already been institutionalised, so that at this time exhibitions were shown in Barcelona that exhibited both the epigones of Informalism (the cycle of exhibitions entitled 0 Figura at the Sala Gaspar, 1960-63) and the experiences linked to the new figurative art, and even the first expressions of the conceptual movement that would come to dominate the following decade.

Among the new offerings, we should highlight the pre-Pop Art paintings by Francesc Artigau, Eduardo Arranz-Bravo, Rafael Bartolozzi, Robert Llimós and Gerard Sala, who made one of their first presentations in the New Expressions (1966) exhibition exhibited at the Sala Gaspar, the most important gallery in Barcelona at the time, alongside René Metras.
