We present, as a new initiative, guided visits to the Republican airfields of the Gloriosa, including a route through the so-called Airfield 318, in the Baix Empordà region.

In view of the growing importance of aviation, at the end of 1936 the Republican government decreed the construction and preparation of numerous military airfields in Catalonia with the aim of combating the Francoist army-a process that accelerated in 1938 following the fall of Teruel into Nationalist hands. The Republican government built 50 airfields throughout Catalonia, 10 of them in the province of Girona, in order to strengthen the defensive rearguard and disperse the threat of bombing. One of these airfields was Canet de la Tallada.

This airfield was established in April 1938 as a field construction-a provisional base designed to ensure the landing and takeoff of aircraft. It was designated Airfield 318, as it belonged to the Third Air Region, First Sector, and was the eighth airfield within this territorial grouping. Aircraft operated from the site until the end of January 1939. It was later occupied by troops of the Italian Corpo di Truppe Volontarie, who engaged with the remaining forces of the Popular Army of the Republic between 7 and 9 February 1939.
