Historical Memory Activities Continue

Friday, July 10, 2026

The programme "Memory of a War: Stories, Lives and Remains of the Spanish Civil War, Exile and Dictatorship" resumes next week with a new series of activities aimed at preserving and sharing historical memory.

As part of the Irla Year, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Josep Irla i Bosch, the 124th President of the Generalitat of Catalonia in exile, and coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, historian and anthropologist Josep Maymí Rich will give the lecture "Irla and the Fight Against Fascism", exploring Irla's commitment to democracy and the role played by Catalan institutions in confronting the rise of fascism.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the fascist coup, the city will also restore and honour the memorial space dedicated to Carles Rahola Llorens in the cemetery, where the journalist, intellectual and republican activist, executed on 15 March 1939, is buried.

During the "Bombed Girona" walking tour, historian David Garcia Algilaga will explain the aerial attacks suffered by the city during the Spanish Civil War while visiting the places where local residents sought shelter. These historical sites can be visited throughout the year, either independently or through guided tours on request.

The programme also includes a gender perspective through the tour "The Secret Memory of Sinful Girona", led by Gerard Bagué Hugas, and the theatrical visit "Queta, Consol and the Experiences of a War", by La Minúscula theatre company, which recounts the conflict and the bombings through the eyes of two girls from Girona.

Victims of Francoist repression also feature prominently. "Clandestine Letters from a Man Sentenced to Death", based on the prison writings of Josep Turon Mir and presented by Josep Casadellà, tells the story of the harsh repression following the war. Meanwhile, Xavier Corominas Mainegre leads the "Torras-Hostench Factory Prisoners Route", focusing on the young activists imprisoned during the 1970s for defending their rights, some of whom spent fifteen months in Pont Major prison.

Finally, the performance "Caught Between Two Realities", by La Nave Va theatre company, follows the lives of four people forced to leave their homes in search of refuge and asylum, inviting audiences to reflect on migration, refuge and borders.

Full programme details are now available, and bookings are open on the website.

We look forward to welcoming you!
