Temporary closure of the Sardana and Cobla gallery

Monday, March 9, 2026

Since its earliest days, the Museum of History of Girona has had a space dedicated to displaying instruments, objects, documents and information related to the history of the sardana and the cobla in the city. The gallery was created from collections donated or loaned to the museum by their original owners.

Currently, and for almost ten years now, the gallery has been located on the fourth floor of the museum. Due to the characteristics of the building that houses this public heritage space, access to the information displayed there is difficult and not suitable for all visitors.

For this reason, and alongside the intention to renovate and rehabilitate the rest of the museum spaces, as well as to update and improve the contents and narratives and enhance accessibility, the museum has launched a renovation process that involves the temporary dismantling of the Sardana gallery and other museum rooms.

Provisionally, and until the definitive closure of the spaces that will be renovated, the area will host some small-format temporary exhibitions. At the same time, in order to facilitate access to information about the history of the sardana and the museum's collection, an online initiative has been planned to communicate and disseminate these contents through websites and social networks.
Among other initiatives in this regard, the Museum of History of Girona has participated in the development of CATICAT, a project led by the Museum of Music whose aim is to catalogue and document all public collections of musical instruments in the country.

In order to actively contribute to this project - which we consider interesting and useful for promoting the musical collections of Catalan museums - the Museum of History of Girona has digitised all the information contained in the Sardana Gallery (instruments, objects, documents, and interpretive and dissemination materials), with the aim of making this information accessible through the platforms designed specifically for this project.

The aim is to integrate all the information from the Sardana exhibition space in Girona into the catalogue being developed by the Museum of Music, CATICAT, a collective catalogue of musical instruments held in museums and public collections throughout Catalonia. It offers a single access point to more than 4,300 instruments from 31 museums and provides a window onto Catalonia's musical heritage.

Thanks to this initiative, the instrument collection of the Museum of History of Girona will be available on this website with images and technical descriptions of each item. In this way, the museum will guarantee access to its Sardana collections and to information about the history of this traditional dance in the city and within the historical context of Girona.
