Easter is a good time to visit the Girona History Museum

Friday, April 11, 2025

These days there will be special opening hours

The Easter holidays are a great time to enjoy the city, and we also suggest a visit to the Girona History Museum.

The building alone is worth a visit to discover the preserved spaces of the former Capuchin convent of Saint Anthony, which was the most important of the order and had annexes to those of Mataró, Arenys de Mar, Vic, Sabadell, Sarriá (Barcelona), Olot, Banyoles, Figueres, Perpignan, Ceret, Prada, Tuyr, Vincà, and Elna. If you visit the Museum, you can access the [cemetery-drying], the only complete cemetery preserved in Catalonia, which is related to the Italians of Rome and Palermo. You will discover the curious mortuary ritual that this order practiced since the 16th century: the drying of the bodies of deceased friars.

Furthermore, in the Museum, you will also find all the historical figures of festive imagery and monographic spaces dedicated to radio, copla, and sardana, among others. Through thematic rooms, multifaceted collections, and unique spaces, the plural and diverse stories that have shaped Girona and the lives of its people over time are explained.

The Girona History Museum houses the municipal heritage collection and selects representative and emblematic pieces that help narrate the city's historical, social, and cultural history. These pieces allow for the construction of an inclusive and cross-cutting discourse, aimed at both citizens and visitors, that recovers the most forgotten stories and builds collective identities toward the city, its present, and its past. It also exhibits humble, everyday objects that are key to understanding the basic elements that build a society.

And, of course, you will find quiet, restful spaces where you can relax and enjoy excellent panoramic views.

We encourage and invite you to visit these days.
