The Girona History Museum launches the new memory itinerary "Clandestine letters of a condemned to death"

Tuesday, May 21, 2024

The activity is based on the clandestine correspondence written by Josep Turon during his captivity in Girona prison in 1940. On Saturday 25 May, at 11 a.m., Josep Casadellà Turon, grandson of Josep Turon, and Salomó Marquès Sureda, they will drive this new route that takes them to post-war Girona

The Museum of History of Girona premieres this Saturday, May 25, the new memory itinerary "Clandestine letters of a condemned man", a tour based on the 35 letters that Josep Turon Mir wrote during his 291 days of captivity in the prison of Girona, from February 25 to November 14, 1940. It is a valuable testimony of the post-war period in our country, with the striking experience of the war councils and the harshness of being condemned to death pending the execution of the sentence. Registration to attend can be done on the Girona History Museum website .

The proposal is part of the Museum's "Silenced Voices Victims of Repression" program and is an adaptation of the book Clandestine Correspondence. 291 days before death. Letters from the prison of Girona (1940) , by Josep Casadellà Turon, grandson of Josep Turon.

The new route will be offered next Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m., and also on Saturday, June 8, as part of the "Historical Itineraries" cycle organized by the Girona History Museum. With the help of Josep Casadellà Turon, grandson of Josep Turon, and Salomó Marquès Sureda, the people participating in the activity will move to post-war Girona and visit the scenes of the victims of Franco's repression.

The starting point will be the Girona History Museum and, subsequently, the visit will be diverted to the Palace of Justice, the Old 51st Infantry Regiment, the gate of the prison yard, Carrer de la Llebre and the Girona cemetery. Some examples of the letters and images that will be given to the people attending have been collected.

This route is added to the new itineraries proposed this year, all focused on post-war Girona. An example is the "Prisoners' Route of the Torras Hostench Factory", set in the period of late Francoism in Girona and created in the framework of the 50th anniversary of the events. It explains the arrest of six people for having set up a workers' commission in the factory in Sarrià de Ter, who were detained between a week and fifteen months in Pont Major prison. The route, which premiered last April 13, will take place again on Saturday October 5, at 11 a.m., and will be run by Xavier Corominas Mainegre.
