On October 6, 1934, the president of the Generalitat, Lluís Companys, proclaimed the Catalan State of the Spanish Federal Republic. This event must be understood in the context of a widespread peasant and worker mobilization and the local dynamics of the broad space that was the Catalan Republican world. However, it must also be framed within the long-standing social and political tensions present in Republican Catalonia and the broader social and political context of a Spanish Second Republic that was out of step with an international trend where fascism seemed to be advancing unimpeded.
The 90th anniversary of the events of October 1934 is an opportunity to create an exhibition project that, by combining various registers—visual, sound, textual, etc.—can bring to a wide audience a global and complex view of the Catalan October of 1934.
