The abundant visual and written representation of Girona has effectively created a genre of its own, closely linked to heroic literature, a picturesque worldview and modern tourist hyperbole. But, on more intimate scale, it has also been shaped using the memory of those who have liked there or passed through it, their changing sensibility and the ethical and social awareness with which it has been judged as a mirror of one's virtues or as an impossible colossus. Folded over its own beauty, which the watercolour reflection of the Onyar river helps to equate with the dangerousself-contemplation of Narcisus, it has inspired everything from martial praises for its epic past and its austere integrity , to melancholic verses by poets who saw projected there, in the moonlight, the ruin and fragility of human existence itself.
Starting out from the book "Girona, in living stone", of which it is not an illustration bit ruther a coda that invites us to think critically about the wide range of wiews that have contributed to building the discourse regarding the city, this exhibition offers a dozen windows through which to venture into another Girona.
