This year marks the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, a conflict that introduced a new and terrible form of warfare: the so-called total war, characterized by systematic aerial bombings against the civilian population in the rear guard, which became a target of the enemy.

During the three years of the Spanish Civil War, several shelters and other passive defense structures were designed and built for citizens to protect themselves from the threat of indiscriminate aerial bombings against the population.

This route explores the shelters, barricades and trenches spread throughout Girona's underground, complemented by memory accounts and life stories of the people who took refuge there.

The itinerary begins at the Museum of History of Girona and ends with a visit inside the to the air raid shelter in the Children's Garden.
