The discovery in the Arxiu Municipal de Girona of a series of letters written by a woman who, until then, was virtually unknown has allowed us to bring the figure of Manuela Carreras Duran back to light. A woman of remarkable intellectual calibre, she occupied a fascinating place within the city's literary culture, yet was clearly out of step with the conventions of her time.
Manolita Carreras was the eldest daughter of the renowned Girona ophthalmologist Dr Bonaventura Carreras, who passed on to her his passion for astronomy and books.
She was an educated, inquisitive and courageous woman. She read Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal and discussed philosophy and literature with Carles Rahola, a close friend and confidant from her youth.
As part of the 31st edition of Science Week, an initiative promoting science outreach through free activities across Catalonia, the Museum of History of Girona is presenting this lecture with the aim of bringing the little-known figure of Manolita Carreras, an astronomer from Girona, to a wider audience.
The lecture will explore her life and intellectual interests from a gender perspective and will shed light on her correspondence with the writer Carles Rahola in the early 20th century, through the 34 letters she sent him between November 1908 and 5 May 1909, when he was 27 and she was 23.
