About Us

The Chair in Climate Action was born as a collaboration between the Girona City Council and the University of Girona to promote and advance the study, research, and dissemination of issues related to the climate crisis at the local, supramunicipal, and international levels.

This collaboration in the form of a university chair between the two institutions began in 2012 with the Girona Smart City Chair, an initiative that was pioneering in Europe. As of January 2026, it is being reoriented to focus its scope and define new objectives centred on climate change. As part of this reflection, it was also considered appropriate to adapt its name to the new context and rename it the Chair in Climate Action.

The Chair in Climate Action establishes as its main purpose the study and research of the impact of climate change and the social metabolism of the city and the region. Special emphasis is placed on the impact of the energy transition on the needs of small and medium-sized cities, such as Girona. The Chair in Climate Action aims to act as a catalyst and therefore proposes the organisation of research activities, technology transfer, debate, education, and public outreach.
