Action Plan

The main purpose of the Chair in Climate Action is to investigate the impact of climate change and the social metabolism of the city and region, as well as the energy transition required by small and medium‑sized cities such as Girona. This will be achieved through the organisation of research activities, technology transfer, public debate, educational initiatives, and outreach to citizens.

A programme of teaching, training, applied research, and innovation activities is proposed for the duration of the agreement.

Teaching and Training

Objectives

To promote training in disciplines related to climate change, social metabolism, and the energy transition, and to strengthen activities that help develop educational pathways in this field and prepare professionals capable of addressing the urgent and complex challenges posed by climate change and the current ecosocial crisis.

Action Plan

  • Promotion of final degree projects, master's theses, and doctoral research related to these fields, fostering synergies with the City Council and with projects of relevance to the city and the region.
  • The organisation of workshops on specific topics, involving municipal technical staff and academic researchers from the UdG, in order to facilitate knowledge transfer between the two institutions and encourage discussion around problems and challenges.
  • The Chair may fund educational activities, event registrations, dissemination materials, and expenses associated with inviting speakers in the context of sharing research results on the Chair's areas of interest, particularly those in which the city of Girona or the region play a significant role.

Areas of Work and Applied Research

Objectives

To stimulate research and innovation activity—primarily through its connection with the Institute of Informatics and Applications, in collaboration with the Institute of the Environment and the Girona City Council—and to strengthen the implementation of joint projects aligned with the city's strategies for climate change, social metabolism, and the energy transition.

Areas of Work

Emphasis will be placed on initiatives that promote research and innovation related to:

  • The management of municipal carbon budgets.
  • The development and promotion of new environmental and climate-focused procurement clauses.
  • The reduction of food waste.
  • The promotion of energy communities and the energy sovereignty of municipalities.

The Chair includes the possibility of involving other stakeholders connected to its areas of work.

The Chair in Climate Action undertakes to propose projects in areas of interest to the city and related to its mission, and to promote submissions to competitive national and international calls, putting forward the city of Girona as a potential case study or pilot project whenever possible and when it is of interest to the city.
